Since 1500, when Brazil was discovered, European traditions started influencing the local habits and customs around there.
In the year of 1800 the European Classic Music, and specially the Viennese Waltz, Polkas and Marches, were performed in the balls of High Society of the Empire in Rio de Janeiro, till around 1866 when Brazilian musicians started creating a new style, and African rhythms (Lundu, Maxixe, batuque and so on) were added to these European / Viennese pieces, and Joaquim Calado founded the group “Os Chorões do Calado”, later on joined by Francisca Gonzada, known as Chiquinha Gonzaga, the first and only woman that dared to perform in public in that time. New pieces were composed, and the real first Brazilian genre was born: CHORO (Choro means “Cry”, but the songs are full of colors, feelings, rhythms, complex
harmonies and improvisations!)
Choro is considered the National Brazilian music recognized for its excellence and refinement.
